After selecting "Install ubuntu" from cd, it "loads kernal", then goes to black with blinking cursor

Asked by Clay Baum

I downloaded and burnt the image of ubuntu to a cd. Whenever I boot from the cd, I am greeted with the ubuntu menu. I select "Install" and it loads the kernal before going to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left and that is where it stalls. I am trying to install with the dual boot option on a machine with an existing windows xp pro OS.

May be a problem with your VGA, causing the X window system to not start. If that's the case, you should see a text-based login prompt if you press ctrl+alt+f1. Try rebooting and using the Safe Graphics Mode.

Can you help with this problem?
