will not let me install updates

Asked by brianm

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
When I try to install updates it says,only one soft ware managment is allowed to run at a time. you need to close aptitude orsynaptic.when I go to synaptic I get the message at the top of the page.I tried shuting down the computer that didnot work.I went to the command line and typed in the command 'dpkg--configure-a' it said no such command. HELP ME!

Did you type a space between the dashes?
Like this (replace underscore with a space):
  dpkg_--configure_-a
Cheers

Ops...I forgot to tell you that's a superuser operation.
Type in a shell (the '$' sign is a normal shell, '#' is a root shell):
  $sudo dpkg --configure -a
you will be prompted for your password. Enter your login passwd and you should be done.
Cheers.

just type in console
:: sudo dpkg --configure -a
if that works,
:: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Change status to: purge ok not-installed:
