Attempt to shut down or restart returns to login screen

Asked by Esther Strom

I have a fresh install of Lucid alongside Win7 on a brand-new Dell Inspiron 11z. Install went fine, and all apps seem to be running correctly, but every attempt to shut down or restart simply returns me to the login screen. Both options result in the "are you sure" dialog, but neither will actually shut down (or restart) the computer. The only way I can get it to shut down is with the power button.

Any ideas?

Try to shutdown or restart with this command:

sudo shutdown -h now

or sudo shutdown -r now ----for restart

That worked; I'm not sure why I needed that, though. Is there a reason the menu items for shutdown wouldn't work?

I have the same problem and using teh terminal to close down works but using the pull down to shut down still goes back to login screen. How can I restore this to working?
I'm new to Ubunto.

Is there a permanent fix for this bug?

The only way I was able to get it to work correctly was when I upgraded to Maverick.
