Hello,

Are you sure you burnt the CD correctly? There is a guide that might help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Hello,

Sorry in advance for another set of trivial questions:

- what were the names of the ISO files that you refer to as "server both 6 and 7", exactly?

- did you verify the MD5 sums of those before burning them?

- what errors do you get on booting the server CDs?

Ubuntu versions are time based. That means version 6.06 was released June 2006, 6.10 in October 2006 and 7.04... You guessed it, in April 2007. :) There might be very large differences from one version to another. So, saying 6 or 7 doesn't say so much. That means at least 4 different versions.

Enough of that. Are you able to boot other cds? Windows XP installation CD for instance?

Why don't you explain what really happens when you've inserted the server cd and reboot? Are you sure you need to use the server cd? All off the software is available in Ubuntu desktop too.

Tasksel automates the installation of a few services. You may want to check out this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Tasksel. It doesn't matter which cd/medium you're using, as long as you're connected to the internet. If you are, any required software will be downloaded. I think I read somewhere about a few new tasks in the next version, Gutsy Gibbon, which will be available in a month.

A server in this case, is just an application that runs without the users interaction and that accepts connections from other software on this or any other machine. To learn how to install software, refer to this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/add-applications/C/index.html. Installing a server is normally quite easy. Configuring it may take some time and effort.

Good luck!
