Install issue

Asked by linuxnoob

I've just downloaded Ububtu and burned it to a CD - rebooted so I could install it ( I want Dual boot, XP is already on, file system is NTFS, dunno if this is a prob?)

.... I get the menu and choose the option to install but get the error:

Loading isolinux Disk error 20, AX=4200, drive 9F

Trying other options gives the same error - anyone any ideas? Would be really thankful!

Hello! Did you check the MD5 sum of the downloaded image? You should also try to choose "Check CD for defects" from the boot menu and see if this produces any error messages.

Btw, NTFS is no problem under Linux these days :)

Hey :)

Dyou mean the md5sum.txt file at the route of the image? What do i check it for? It just looks like a load of txt to me :)

I tried the check CD but that gives the same error

Cheers!

No, I mean the MD5 checksum of the .ISO-image file itself - you can find the instructions on how to check the MD5SUM here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

And the MD5SUMs to check against can be found in the same places as the CD-images, e. g.:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/release/MD5SUMS

Hope this helps :)

Hiya - i downloaded Ubuntu again and went through checking the MD5 checksum but it says the checksums are different?

This is the 2nd time i downloaded it and am just about to start the 3rd (assuming i need to DL it again?) - how many times should I have to get it? Is there a guaranteed host somewhere or could it be my ISP!?

TIA :-)

Hello,

Try to download Ubuntu using BitTorrent protocol. To do this, please download a relevant torrent file first. I'd suggest to download this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent or this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent - the choice between them depends on what you have already downloaded and are more familiar with. If you wish to try Ubuntu before installing it, please download the first file. If you are going to just download Ubuntu in text-mode and have more control on the installation, please download the second one.

Next, you'll need to open this file in a BitTorrent client. If you use Windows, you can get the BitTorrent client there: http://www.bittorrent.com/download. Latest versions of Opera web browser can also handle BitTorrent downloads. The client will download the ISO file and perform some checks to make sure your download is correct.

Hope this helps
