Lost password, Esc does not work, help!

Asked by Arikun

I lost my password, Esc does not work either, a screen comes up, but there is no rescue mode or safe mode. There are two options, none do anything, they just start regular mode. What else can I do??
I haven't used my desktop(it's the one with Ubuntu on it) in several months, none of the passwords I know I use work. Someone please help...

1) Reinstall

2) If there is anything worth saving use a LiveCD and copy it off to an external disk

3)Write down your password in several places.

Hold shift at boot, select recovery mode then select root.

You can now run:

cd /home; ls

and see the usernames on the system. You can now run:

passwd foo

replace 'foo' with the username you want to set the password of, you can now reboot using:

shutdown -r now

and then boot normally and login. YOU DON'T NEED TO REINSTALL!

It shows the esc & f10 and all, but nothing happened when I held shift. Do I hold it as soon as I turn the pc on or Once the menu shows?
