error messages on startup and shutdown that go by too fast to read

Asked by Brian Z

When I start up or shut down my computer, I see a screen with what looks like a long list of error messages. It goes by too fast to read. I'm not having a particular problem otherwise, but I would like to see what it going on. Would these be in a log file somewhere, or might there be a way to pause the process?

If you run:

dmesg | less

You can read the startup messages.

Thanks for the tip. None of that stuff I see when I do dmesg though is what I can see on my screen during startup and shutdown. When I'm starting up I see a lot of lines about "udved" or something like that.

If you press pause on your keyboard it should pause

It seems like maybe that slows things down a little, but not long enough for me to write down what it says. I finally just took a photo, which is legible enough that I can hopefully figure out what it means... thanks!
