dear actionparsnip

thanks for such a quick response
i checked the file sys of the drive in xp, it is fat (not fat 32).
as per ur instructions, waited almost a minute before the process. the output was as follows:

can you post result of:
   lsusb
to check if problem lies in USB detection of sandisk or in a higher level.

All devices are root hub, which means any external USB devices is detected.
Plug and unplug your sandisk to verify it doesn't appear in the list.
Plug and unplug another external USB device to check if it appears in the list.
Try also with another OS (Windows) or in another computer.

ehci_hcd 0000:00:10.3: Unlink after no-IRQ? Controller is probably using the wrong IRQ.

Dead giveaway, check the IRQ settings in BIOS are set to auto assign. The controller is currently misconfigured so the southbridge cannot talk to it.

Dear delance,

Tried to plug and unplug, no response.
The other usb drive that I have is a Buffalo 250 GB HDD, which also has the same problem.
The devices work normally on XP.

Thanks.

Dear actionparsnip,

I'm using an HCL Laptop with "Insyde Software" BIOS, which is not configurable (when I press F2 key on boot for setup). Can you tell me any method with which I can configure the controller from inside Ubuntu?

Thanks.

If it works on XP, we could expect it works with Linux and the BIOS is OK.

1) Can you try with other USB port ? It is possible that motherboard has many USB controller (it happens for desktop computer, less usual with laptop).
2) If at boot screen, you have choice between many kernel, try another one. Perhaps it is a bug linked to a specific version of a Linux kernel.
3) Is it a new bug or do you have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on your computer ?
4) What is the exact model of this laptop, and is it possible to get user manual on the Web (to have a look at BIOS parameters) ?
5) What is the kernel version (try "uname -a") ? Perhaps, we will have to raise a bug against kernel.

Dear delance,

1) Tried it on the two other USB ports, still nothing.

2) I get five options at the boot screen
 a) Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.32-21 generic
 b) Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.32-21 generic (recovery mode)
 c) Memory test (memtest86+)
 d) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
 e) Microsoft Windows XP Professional (on /dev/sda1)

3) I installed Ubuntu in May this yr. There is one 60GB hard disk with three partitions displayed as C, D and F drives, alongwith the Ubuntu partitions which are not displayed in XP. XP is installed on C drive.

4) The model number of the laptop is HCL Notebook P7910, and I think no user manual is available in the market or on the Web.

5) asp@asp:~$ uname -a
Linux asp 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I must be bugging u a lot with all these queries, but I seriously want to switch over permanently from XP (blame the human desire for change).

Thanks again.

If it worked on May, but fails since a few days, I suspect you install a new version of kernel which is bugged.
Unfortunately, I'm not currently on a Ubuntu computer.
Run "Update manager" to see if a new kernel was released (I think a new one was delivered recently), install it and check it.
If not, we will have to see how to install an older kernel and remove last one.
I could test it this evening.
Can you tell me when you got the problem ?

The problem exists ever since I've installed Ubuntu.

Added to the problem is the fact that my internet connection is via a Huawei USB dongle, which is, again, not detected by Ubuntu. So I have to read your reply, copy the instructions to a text file, save it to the HDD, then reboot into Ubuntu, apply the instructions, copy and paste the results back into the text file and then reboot into XP, connect to the net and reply.

I think I should reinstall my copy of Ubuntu, but can that be done while the previous copy exists? Is the process the same as installing it for the first time or are there any changes?

Dear delance,

Surprisingly, when I booted my system with my huawei dongle plugged in, after a short while, it detected the device, and presently I am connected to the net and downloading the latest kernel and other updates. Let us hope it keeps working this way.

Dear delance and actionparsnip,

I guess there is either some fault in my usb port or some bug. I connect my Huawei USB dongle and then boot, it detects the device and then i have to reconfigure my wireless broadband everytime. I think i should report a bug. How can i do that?

I feel the dongle started being detected faster after i installed "afuse 0.2-3", I might be wrong.

Thanks a ton for all the help to both of you. I think I'll click the "Problem Solved" icon.

Take Care.
