Installed ubuntu but can't get sound or internet

I have installed unbuntu on my laptop.....and this seems to be the problem

a friend of mine told me he had a lot of problems with laptops and installing ubuntu.

it is recognizing my network card and even says i am connected tot he internet but i can't display a webpage at all.

when i go to listen to a sound it says that toteum can not access the sound driver network

my laptop is a dell inspiron 1501 AMD 64 bit.

please let me know if you can help.....

Open a terminal and type :

ifconfig

and paste here the answer.

my bad...it is the wirless internet connection that i am hving problems with and when i type iwconfig
it just says that there is no wireless on eth0 or lo
and when i try to turn it on with iwconfig eth0 essid on
or with iwconfig lo essid on
it just says that that operation isn't allowed.
i am not sure if the driver for the wirless card is installed properly....

then you should tell us what is your wireless card chipset.

use command $lspci -vv or $lshw -C network

and paste here... :)
