having problems installing ubuntu

Asked by Levente Feher

Hi guys!

I'm using Linux Ubuntu a few weeks ago on my PC and i decided to install it on my few years old laptop. Well the problem is when I'm installing the OS i keep getting a message saying that the installation cannot be continued due to a problem with the disk, hard drive or the DVD drive, i changed the hard disk so that cannot be the problem, but previously I had problems with the dvd drive so that should be it, unfortunately the laptop is not able to boot from USB. I tried booting from the disk then plugin in the USB stick with .iso file, or the contents of the boot-able disk, but i cant find any installer file, i haven't got any other ideas. So if you have some please let me now. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A60-662, cant get USB booting even with upgrading BIOS.

Thanks for your help anyway
Levi

Did you change your boot order?
did you check livecd for errors?
Did you download OS in slowest mode?
Your boot order should be CD ROM first.
Then check your cd for errors.
Then try to install...

You can also test your RAM using the live CD by pressing space on the stickman screen. This will also need to pass.

You might have to use a CD-Player cleaner kit. (See an office store like Staples.) The CD-ROM disk has a small brush that cleans the optical drive--particularly if the drive is old. Insert the CD-ROM from the kit and start the computer. If the drive stops, power off and do it again. You need about 45-60 seconds of drive spin time total. Once done, remove the CD-ROM (you might have to power the computer on to get it open) insert the Ubuntu installer CD-ROM and try the install again. Let it use the entire disk when the partitioning starts.

Hopefully you have enough RAM on the old computer (at least 256MB, hopefully more) to fully run the install. Best of luck.
