Ubuntu 10.04 LTS hangs on logout but not switch user

Asked by Mark Edgley

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on two different machines now, and in both cases I'm having the same issue. The system hangs on logout, but not on switch user. The normal behavior on logout is that the screen fades to black, the cursor reappears, and then the login screen comes back up. When it hangs, the screen fades to black and then that's it - no disk activity, no cursor, no response to keyboard or mouse inputs. I have to do a hard reboot to get it back. The system does not do this if you simply switch user, so we're making it work by just leaving everybody logged in.

The hanging thing is the same regardless of who is being logged out, and regardless of whether others are logged in.

All help appreciated -

Can you post more information about your system configuration, the buttons you click to get to this stage. Also has your system all the latest updates?

I have two systems, one a Dell P4 system with 1Gb RAM and 500 Gb disk, the other an Asus P5K-VM motherboard with a core-duo processor. Both were fully updated, but neither worked right. It may now be fixed, though - I stripped the Asus machine installation off and re-installed the OS this morning, and this latest install works right so far. Frustrating - I've been fighting with this for weeks.
