Need Educational setup infrastructure information

Hi,
I am working in an educational center, where we have more than 500 computers.
Now our infrastructure is not so good and I want to re-design the total infrastructure.
So, Please suggest me what will be the best setup (hardware and software) for us, where our maintenance cost will be less but performance will be maximum, User can access there data and programs sitting from any workstation.
I am thinking server will be in cloud, and client will be disk-less thin client.
