Of course the Logitech webcam is already connected to the USB port

You can't. Skype on linux does not support webcams. You should contact Skype to ask them to release a newer version for Linux I'm afraid.

As I said, it wont work. You can use Ekiga to talk to another user with a compatible client - which does support webcams.

Buy skype 1.3 and 1.4 for Linux does _not_ support webcams.

I've gotten my Logitech Quickcam to work in 32-bit Ubuntu, but no luck so far with the 64-bit.
The first thing to do is install the little app called "Cheese" and see if your camera works with this. If it doesn't, then you probably have some driver or installation issue that I'm not competent to help you with. If it does work with Cheese then try going to the command line and typing

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
skype

This is what got my camera working with Skype. If I understand it right, there's some kind of problem with the Skype compilation that doesn't automatically call the compatibility layer, so you need this command to make that library available. Incidentally, if somebody knows how to make this work with the 64-bit build, I'd be most appreciative.

Correction; I made a mistake above. The command should have been

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

One one line. Also I wanted to add that, thanks to other threads here, the Skype webcam feature now works on my 64-bit system. It was only necessary to uninstall the .deb skype that I had downloaded from Skype itself, and install the version though the Medibuntu repository, after enabling Medibuntu via Software Sources.

Hi!

 This was said in the last respons:
"It was only necessary to uninstall the .deb skype that I had downloaded from Skype itself, and install the version though the Medibuntu repository, after enabling Medibuntu via Software Sources"

Now,how to uninstall the .deb skype and what is Medibuntu and how to install it trough Medibuntu?

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 and I'm new to linux. So, please can someone provide me with step by step to set up a webcam for skype.

Thank you
