My desktop has gone inactive

I just noticed that my desktop, which should have some icons on it, has become inactive. The items are in the
~/Desktop directory, but do not appear on the desktop. It is annoying and inconvenient.

What do I do to re-enable this feature?

UBUNTU 10.04 updated to date
gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2 (Good grief, can't you guys find a better number system?)

Forget it. I logged off and logged on a new session, and the problem went away.
