Ubuntu isn't comeing up.

Asked by Allen

I've been enjoying Ubuntu in every way possible until today.

As I was using the keyboard my screen went nuts (it looked like a bunch of compact frames were rolling from bottom to top).
I was unable to get any response from the keyboard or mouse so I forced the computer down by holding down the on button.
When the OS restarted it told me I "May have errors on a disk" and it did whatever it dose for a moment and the screen went
black. That's all I get now, I force it down and restart only to get a black screen.
I put my Ubuntu disk in and restarted the machine and still nothing.

I hope someone can help, I dislike this Windows machine I'm on right now!

Thank you, Allen

Perhaps you have a failing disk, though Ubuntu should still be able to boot from the CD if that was the case. Do you have your bios set to boot from CD first?

a) Please note instead of press the Reset or power button to reboot the pc please try this:

To manage the freeze of your system and even Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn’t work anymore, the mouse is stuck on the screen any none of the key combinations will work, don’t think of the reset button just yet.

Hold down the Right Alt and SysRq keys and press this sequence:

R E I S U B

This will cleanly unmount drives, terminate processes and nicely reboot your machine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key

b) Please press ctrl+alt+f2 to try to have a pseudo terminal access if you can get this access make login wuth yuor user and password to the system and try this type it:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then to force a filesystem check at next boot please type:

sudo touch /forcefsck
sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then if this doesn't solve please try by pressing shift at Ubuntu boot
then try to start with a previous installed kernel, please choose it from the showed grub kernels list.

I got it working, here's what I did.

Not long ago I installed additional RAM. It helped speed things up, and all was well until this issue.
I got the idea I should put the old 256 memory stick back in and see if it would boot-up. It worked!

Just for fun, I reinstalled one of the 1000 MB sticks and it loaded up fine. I may have a bad memory stick, at the time of this writing I had only installed one of the two sticks. I will try switching stitcks to see if the other one has a problem after I test the first one for a while.

I needed a lot of upper memory to help run my 3D CAD program.

Sorry I didn't think to mention the hardware upgrade in my first post.

Thanks to all for the help, Allen
