Problem with ATI graphics card Drivers

Asked by gerath32003

Hi i have this issue that i am having I think with my graphics drivers. When i install the dirver for my ATI card which is in the drop down in Administrator. I lose the desktop effects for Beryl and even the ubuntu desktop effects. I have a ATI base card. I read that to use the xorg-driver-fglrx would give me the full 3D and effects for ATI base cards. But when i applied the cards dirvers in Administrator drop down Restricted dirver manager, the ATI card was listed but was unchecked. I insalled it but i lose all desk top effects not even the Beryl works. I tried to install it cause i was having problems not being able to get the 3D cube, too fully work properly. If anyone could help Thanks....

Hi

Here is an usefull link : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager

When you use the free driver 'radeon', you are able to use aiglx, which is a part of Xorg to run compiz, so that there is nothing more to do.

As ati (maybe amd now) doesn't want to support this in its non-free driver 'fglrx', you're unable to use compiz out-of-the-box with these drivers. You have to install Xgl, as described on this page : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/Xgl

This should enable you to used the desktop effet again.

Once more, we can see how bad can be non-free drivers, as only ati decide what should be supported, and doesn't care about community request.

Have fun !

PS : Beryl is depreciated, it has been merged with compiz into compiz-fusion, you should try it here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion
