usb wifi wep

I have successfully installed a D_LINK DWL-G122 C1 3.00 into Ubuntu 6.06 and it works well. I want to add some security to it WEP at least but preferably WPA. If I go to system/adminstration/networking and try to add either a network name (ESSID) or a WEP key the system goes off to action this and freezes solid. I have asked the question on the forums but am getting no response.

At least in the B2 version (RT2570 chipset) the driver is preliminary/buggy but useable if manually configured. I think the C1 has the RT61 or RT71 or similar chipset, should be the same deal. This will improve with time but try setting up /etc/network/interfaces manually (google around)

I found that putting ssid etc in /etc/network/interfaces made no difference the system works but the changes made have no effect

Can you please please please tell me how you installed the driver and got it working? Where can I download what I need ? Can I use the Adept manager to install it? Your help is appreciated !
