How do I add pictures to GDM login face browser

I like the idea of a list of users presented on the login screen.
I've got a GDM theme installed which has such a list, but the users have a default icon

HOW DO I add custom picture icons for the users?

WHERE are these pictures stored? what path?

HOW DO I associate customized pictures or icons with individual users?

Have you tried adding a picture to your account via System --> Preferences --> About me, then click the picture and add one.
