Installation issues Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Robert Aguilera

I downloaded the 32 bit version of Ubuntu and after succesfully installing it and rebooting I run into a problem.
After choosing Ubuntu as the OS I want to run, a list of commands appears and it stops right at this one...

"[<c0104087>] kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10"

I've tried to uninstall, reburn a new cd. I don't know what else to do. After installing I reboot the computer, and choose Ubuntu. I've tried to install with the cd in the drive, without it. I get stuck at the same spot. I'm not sure if I'm missing a step. Can you please help?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you test the CD for defects?
Did you burn the CD slowly?
Have you tested your RAM?

Here some general note and howto:

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Prerequisites: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Please also be sure to read the release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
To avoid download errors please prefer to download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol.
2) check the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps otherwise
install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/ if you are using Windows and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

3) burn the iso image onto a cd, to do it install and use http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
4) insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and reboot your pc. You must not see Windows starting and you can try Ubuntu from cdrom and then install it

If you have trouble with installation (the system freeze or you can't complete it) be sure to read the above suggestions, then:

1.a ) Please boot entirely (you must not see windows starting) from Ubuntu live install cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu

Thank you for all your steps. I did the following.
1. I redownloaded a new image file of Ubuntu.
2. I checked the md5sum and found them to be the same values.
3. I downloaded infrarecorder and burned it to a cd.
4. I rebooted my computer, changed the boot order, and loaded up the installation cd.
5. I got to the Ubuntu load screen, and followed your directions.
6. When I hit "Check disc for defects" the same command lines appeared and it stopped again at the same spot "[<c0104087>] kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10".......

I checked my ram memory and it passed. I believe it is a problem with my disc drive. When I burned the cd I burned it at 8x speed and didn't run any other program. I am going to purchase a usb drive here in a bit and attempt to load it that way. Thank you folks for your help. I will notify you if I am succesful with a usb drive.

I tried the USB route and I ran into the same problem. It happens whether I install it or try to run a demo version of it. I run into the same problem. I'm not sure exactly what the deal is and I don't find anyone else in the forum who has the same problem. I don't if this helps but I'm on a Toshiba Satelitte computer an A505 series. It has an i3 dual processor at 2.13 ghz with 4 gigs of ram.

I'm kind of at a dead end here. I thought maybe it was my cd-rom, but it also doesn't work on the USB stick. I even let the USB installer reformat the drive as recommended. It just always begins to boot then stops right at the same spot as I listed above. Anyone last piece of advice?

Hi,

I search a little bit on the internet and it seems that installing Ubuntu on this Toshiba A505 can be quite a problem. It seems to have been solved howver but the path to follow needs some knowledge:

http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1470732&page=2

One thing you may try is boot with the live CD, when you see the keyboard and small human at the bottom of the purple screen, press any key to get to the classic live CD menu. Select your language (and your keyboard eventually) then press the F6 key and try among the offered choices, like "ACPI off" or "nomodeset", etc. to try if it works better. If not try to implemnt if you can the tricks done in the post on uluga.

Good luck.

Can you help with this problem?
