I installed 10.04 with Windows XP already installed. Is there a way to just run Ubuntu 10.04 and uninstall XP?

Asked by David Jakstys

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 with Windows XP and I am running both of them right now. I prefer to just run Ubuntu and get rid of Windows XP. Previously ignoble recommended a link. I tried this link using the Ubuntu Software Center but I still have a choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu.

Thanks for the honesty.  I am down to 10 gb of memory on a 40 gb hard drive.  Am thinking of installing a Sato hard drive that measures 320 gb.  It's only 70 bucks at Fries Electronics.

I added firestarter and regular updates have been happening.  But no not anything more than that.  I have just used the default software.  I really like it.

Please configure or remove firestarter (firewall) or your pc will not able to connect to the net...

to fully check and upgrade your system using terminal using command line,
open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Tip: right click with mouse on the terminal title caption and select the item "Always on Top" doing this you will force the terminal window to stay on top of the other windows and you will find very easy to copy single row from this web page into the terminal...
Something more about using the terminal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UsingTheTerminal

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy then right click into the terminal and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )

sudo apt-get --purge remove firestarter

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Here some general note and howto:

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Prerequisites: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Please also be sure to read the release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
To avoid download errors please prefer to download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol.
2) check the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps otherwise
install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/ if you are using Windows and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

3) burn the iso image onto a cd, to do it install and use http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
4) insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and reboot your pc. You must not see Windows starting and you can try Ubuntu from cdrom and then install it

If you have trouble with installation (the system freeze or you can't complete it) be sure to read the above suggestions, then:

1.a ) Please boot entirely (you must not see windows starting) from Ubuntu live install cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu

to remove xp, u can actually simply reformat the xp partition using gparted, ubuntu is nit effected, AS LONG AS u install ubuntu on a different partiton, not on ub, however, i belive, the setting in grub is not deleted. i am not sure last time how i delete it, but if i am not misktaken, i use pardus linux to do the job.
