uninstall completely all skype files

Asked by john

I simply want to remove all Skype files from my computer - I have had the default application from Synaptic Package manager - but have also uninstalled this and downloaded from Skype the latest Skype 1.4 for Ubuntu. When this is opened I cannot log in - I am told another Skype programme may be running. So I am getting nowhere. So I am thinking to uninstall everything skype and begin again. But howdo I do this?

How did you install 1.4? Using the .deb from skypes website? If so you should be able to remove it in Synaptic.

What does the following command in a terminal produce (it should list if skype is installed as a deb)

dpkg -l skype

It shows this

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
ii skype 1.3.0.53-1medi A VoIP software

This is the original version installed from synaptic.

So you should be able to remove that with synaptic, or on the command line like this:-

sudo apt-get remove skype

The present Skype - the default version I have re-installed only operates correctly on start up. If I close the window, it will not re open, citing possibly another instance of Skype running, or ~/.skype files are corrupted, or that I have incorrect permissions. My whole quest is to try and get back to a correct operation whether it be Skype 1.3 or the newer Skype 1.4. Is there a way of determining how many versions are running at the same time? Thanks for you help.

When you close skype it minimises to the notification area. So it's still running. Is that the case you're seeing? Do you have a notification are on your panel?

on the original log in, I open Skype and it requires a log in and password. This opens Skype with all my details. Now, when I minimise it, Skype goes to the bottom panel. Before it had an icon in the top right panel that remained there indicating my status, and could be used to open the window.

If I close the Skype window, I am not able to log in again. If I sign out and then close Skype I am able to login again.

I hope this is as you wish. I am new to Ubuntu, and that may be part of the problem.

So you're saying that you no longer have an S icon in the top right hand corner of the screen (the notification area).

I wonder if your notification area has disappeared. Could you right click the top panel, add to panel, and add a notification area, see if the green skype "S" icon appears (when it's opened).
