what makes you think your memory is getting less ?
example . i have 2 gb of ram, on the system monitor it shows 1.8 gb and this is because it is shared ram with my video . when i step up the visual effects to extra i will use 410 mb of the ram , drop the effects to none and i only use 215 mb of this ram . ram = memory the more you have running at one time the more memory/ram you will use . i have read statements online saying i have 4gb of ram installed but ubuntu only shows 2 gb .

the reason i have said it is loosing memory is the following.
Some time ago my laptop kept crashing and had to keep doing reinstalls then I figured out what was happening I didn't have enough memory.
So i installed disk usage analyze so I could check how much memory i had it was the when i used the computer after a while I would have less and less available memory left and I didn't add any new programs other than updates sent by Ubuntu which took a little memory, I then installed Bleachbit
and now was able to get rid of temporary files and stuff stored in caches This has helped but it still does some loosing of memory but far less than it use to as i am able to clear out most of the stuff left in
I now have approx 630 mg left out of the 4g installed hope this should make more clear my problem
Thanks for the help,
Peter

where did you get your install cd from? what version is it ?

open a terminal (applications > accessories > terminal ) and type "sudo apt-get clean"

open disk usage analyzer and click on scan filesystem and see which folder is using up the free space. If the folder is var then your problem will be solved by running apt-get clean.if the folder is home then you need to delete or move your movies and music files to another partition.

why did he have to install disk usage analyzer ? mine was pre installed . that is why i ask about his install cd , and version .

I downloaded ubundo 10.4 to a disk then installed it from disk.
I have dawn sudo-apt clean several times and all is clean.
i do not have any movies or music installed
O have done sudo apt clean as root user and the regular way
Actually I didn't have to install disk usage analyzer I just made it available so I could use it.
Thanks for your help so far we seem to be on the same location.

Peter,
You are talking about tools and procedures to clean up hard disk space but then you said:
"I now have approx 630 mg left out of the 4g installed hope this should make more clear my problem
Thanks for the help,
Peter"
-which would indicate that you are concerned about decreasing amount of RAM (memory leak) , not disk space. Are you reading the 630meg from SytemMonitor? Does it stay the same after a reboot. Forgive me if I don't quite understand the issue.

you can right click on a terminal and select paste. if you are talking about the output from the terminal then you can do this "dpkg -l | grep -i linux-image > ~/output.txt" now go to the home folder and you will find a file named output.txt

I start with this much memory ( used 2.5 g available 1 g )
as I use computer available keeps getting less such as ( used 2.5 available 889 m )
and the figures keep changing ttill the computer starts acting up
then I go to bleach and find the missing memory I clear it out, then I am almost
back to the original memory If I go to adm bleach I can get back to original memory
It was working OK till the next to the last upgrade

Also i notice when i check memory in disk usage analyzer in the preferences, I can only
look at the memory in the 4 gig
THe 16 gig memory is not showing for some reason and things that should be going into the main memory 16gig are ending up in the 4 gig memory
I do remember when the 16 g was showing things were being saved in it instead of the 4 g memory
what is causing this? as it may be a clue to what is happening
