Asked by naveen kumar reddy

I am new to ubuntu. When I installed ubuntu 10.04 besides my windows 7 from a live cd,I used to get ubuntu; with linux 2.6.32-21-generic,ubuntu with recovery mode, two mem tests n my windows 7 option during startup. After updating ubuntu from update manager,it now shows ubuntu with linux 2.6.32-23 n aslo ubuntu with linux 2.6.32-21 both with recovery modes.I know almost nothing about linux or ubuntu.I just want to have one ubuntu n want to know why this happened. How can I remove the older n have the newer one.

It's OK. You have just updated from one kernel to another and the boot shows both. They don't take up much space and there is nothing to worry about.

There is one school of thought that you should keep at least two kernels. If one has a problem then you can use the other one.

To remove old kernels look e.g. here: http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2007/10/17/remove-ubuntu-kernels-you-dont-need/
