Have installed Ubuntu but am being asked for password what is it

On my first boot up of Ubuntu it is asking me for a password Please could you inform of of the next step to get past this screen

it is the password you will use to login to your system. you can enter any password

Do you mean the liveCD or the installed system?

During the setup process, you should have been asked to specify a username and password. That would be your login password.

From your description, it seems that you haven't gone through this process, but are actually using the live CD instead. If so, the login username appears as "ubuntu", and the password is blank, that is, just press Enter or click the log in button without typing any password at all.
