newbie problems

Asked by roro

Hi there, I've just installed Ubuntu 10 and I'm having real issues with it that I am sure are just down to my newbie head. First, how on earth do I run drivers and .exe files that I used in vista? I have WINE but it hasn't helped so far. I can't use vista any more because even when I select it at the dual boot start up window, ubuntu boots up anyway.

I know that ubuntu is the way forward but if everything I try to do is going to be this elusive, I can't see windows fading into the sunset anytime soon!

You can´t use windows drivers on Linux. Those drivers are made only for Windows.

If you can´t boot Vista, try to reinstall Grub: GRUB 2

So, if windows drivers won't work with ubuntu, does that mean that a straight installation of ubuntu can't use peripherals like game controllers, external sound cards, mobile phones etc? If that is the case, I think I might have missed the point of this OS.

I installed ubuntu from a usb drive. I exected to be able to run it with a dual boot. I don't understand running it under windows as I don't see the advantage of doing this.

linux uses its own drivers because most manufactures of these peripherals do not release drivers for linux. ubuntu will detect most of the devices out of the box and you dont have to install drivers for them.

Can you help with this problem?
