Wasn't there a package called 'ttf-malayalam-fonts'?

yes the package is installed . but the font is not malayalam . the language is english . I am having windows xp installed in my PC where I experienced the same problem . But after installing the font" mlkr0ntt_TTF.ttf" the website was displayed correctly . You can get malayalam fonts in the given web address http://salrc.uchicago.edu/resources/fonts/available/malayalam/

also you can observe the difference in the malayalam font provided with ubuntu and these fonts

the website I was trying to open was www.manoramaonline.com

kindly let me know How I could make my browser to rend these fonts

With regards
achapp

manorama online is not using a "malayalam" font. They use an ascii proprietery font. Download the font from their site.
Or use firefox + padma combination and any malayalam unicode font.
Hope this helps. padma.mozdev.org will give you the firefox add-on Padma.
