All dark with 10.04

Asked by Jeremy Johnson

I have an old Toshiba laptop that worked fine on 8.10. Well, I dug it out of the garage and (no surprise) it was many upgrades short. So, I let it upgrade to 9.04. Everything appeared to be functioning fine. Then, the next day, I let it upgrade to 10.04. Ever since the laptop won't boot completely.

I get a screen with the word Ubuntu on it with 5 dots below. It cycles through the dots then the screen goes totally black and it just sits there. I tried creating a LiveCD and the same thing happened (just slower). So, on a total lark, I created a LiveCD with the netbook version and same thing.

Not sure what else to try at this point. Any ideas?

Upgrading from 8.10 to 10.04 is too big a jump.
Suggest you do a fresh install for it.

ps: you mentioned "I created a LiveCD...." ; 'created' or 'run' ?
'created' with a totally black screen? how?
if you cannot "run" a livecd, I don't think you can install it. Your old laptop may be too old...
How much ram? Processor specs? If underspec, recommend you try Lubuntu instead. Works great.

Did you upgrade to 9.10 in between 9.04 and 10.04? Leapfrogging will cause you issues and is not advised nor supported

Can you help with this problem?
