web cam detection

Asked by WolfgangS

My creative labs VF0250 should work out of the box on Ubuntu 7.... and as I recall it worked on prior versions I had then 10.04 which I have updated to now. Fact is when I plug it in the control light on the web cam doesn't come on like on my XP laptop, it doesn't show on XSane or skype 2.1.0.81, even so it shows a device USBcamera(041e:4051) (/dev/video0).
It works and is detected on Cheese which I just installed to check???

xsane is a scanner tool and not for webcams so trying xsane is pointless.

Can you give the output of:

lsusb

We need to know the chip, most times the make and model is moot.

If it works on cheese, then it is working.

1) The web cam used to be detected and offered by xsane after scanning for devices so it is not pointless just an observation.
I wouldn't know how to or where to look for Isusb and dont know what it is and also not how to figure out the chip. sorry I am more an end-user.

2) I know that the web cam is working on cheese but not on Skype which is more important to me. skype shows as I said a device, USBcamera(041e:4051) (/dev/video0) but I dont get a picture and the control light on the camera is at first when I press the Test button in Skype /options/video settings blinking once and then there is nothing.

Can you help with this problem?
