Boot windowsXP problem

Asked by Yudhir Khanal

After a hibernation in Windows XP Sp3 I ran UBUNTU 10.04 LTS(4-29) which was already installed, a problem arised! This routine was normal ! On hibernation Drive C primary for generally locks, that is normal too ( But it is at least displayed in My computer & option of force mount shows up).

But this time I found that C drive wasn't displayed at all. Further more When i tried to boot XP it showed:
invalid device (aa93844cdh... so on.) (may be Its a media id for c drive. )
invalid signature
Press any key to return ...(to GRUB)

Shocking! i have no Drive C & just lost my Xp For no reason . Ubuntu works fine.(thats how i am able to write to you in this forum!)
I have essential data on my Disc including installed softwares... So Gettin my data is essential,,,

I tried to acess my C drive through a LIVE DVD of Ubuntu Lts !0.04,,but no change in problem (C Its not displayed).
Though i don't exactly know to reinstall GRUB but i did a try by rescue mode selecting sda7 (its where ubuntu is installed) & then installing grub to primary drive sda(0) or (main master boot ) . Results the same.
I can still confirm that c drive eists (It is seen in Partition manager in Rescue mode)

Now its upto you guys out there to help me! I am clueless!

well nothing important !
you make few confusion...
hibernated in xp it is a thing and use ubuntu another because you are in dual-boot so the two systeme are separated (2 partitions) and it is not because you do something wrong on windows that ubuntu works on better.

have you done .bs when you have installed ubuntu and follow the right tutorial ?

you should have to have a file call .img done with - (tutorial dualboot) - your ubuntu's terminal.
put this one on your desktop ubuntu and click twice, (or only one ?) your xp is now available.

Making you clearer.....

I use dual boot. I installed Windows XP and only then i installed UBUNTU 10.04 & has been about a month or so . There was no problem till now. Hibernating Windows and Running Ubuntu was a usual thing for me. I had done this many times

Ubuntu & Windows are in different drives. Sda 7(ext3) for ubuntu, sda 9 Or! 8 is for Swap Finally windows it at sda1 Or C: partition. I think all the criterias for dual boot have been met! As everything ran very well for a month or so.
Then after This hibernation the problem showed up.
On trying to boot up for Windows XP (windows loader for Nt/2000?XP) The following messsage appeared:
error: no such device 983850a7385085e2
error : invalid signature
Press any key to return...

Sorry I coudn't understand your suggestions!
I know dualboot config is right!
What is .bs & .img file ? Please give me links or suggest me on this.

it is not a suggestion but only a recall of simple rules.
(sorry for the delay, i mean to answer you, my login in launchpad was a little difficult today).

SDA means ONE disk
sda1 then few partitions in this one
SDB means TWO disk !

so you say ''are in different drives, i tell you "no" but in different partitions "yes"!

there are full of ways to solve your little 'unluck', and it is very easy and clear.
(i am in dualboot with xp and 9.10 and all is fine and update)

when you do an dual-boot, you must had done with your terminal two things :
one: .bs
two: .img
like that (one you can choose your operating system)(two you can recover xp if you had a problem)

All is explained carefully and in details in every tutorial -dualboot-and with pictures step by step in your langage (in every langage you should find it !)

IMPORTANT : if you think it is not that; but a bug about ibernation or 10 lucid linx or a hacker or me p.e, please in the title of your next question, write : hibernation lucid linx or another title clearer- " i am victim of a hacker or robinjane has given to me bad advices and have not understood my own problem..." and another person than me will understand immediately what is about !
thank you for your patience, your question and your answer.

Thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

THIS I THINK IS A MAIN PROBLEM !

error: no such device 983850a7385085e2
error : invalid SIGNATURE
Press any key to return...

I today checked the disk utility present in the UBuntu 10 (its in ubu 9.04 too) . All my others partitions (& yes! you r right I have only one device & other are partitions) were shown with their labels (D: E:F:)& file systems (ie: NTFS (here))

Except!
Drive C : The windows partition is shown as Unknown. Flagged as bootable(certainly!) &
Usage is - (blank) & there is no mount option.
Other partitions have usage -File system. And mount options

Is This what signature is !
What does this mean? I think ubuntu is not recognising the Partition . And windows boot loader too is not recognising the partition( as GRUB simply points windows loader to MBR in C drive right

ok, you are inside the problem -grub,loader,mbr...
if you have not find the file .IMG , it is because maybe you have forgotten to do it at the right moment.
.IMG is done during the installation, on ubuntu, and allows you to recover xp if a problem appears. so it is better to put in on a usb/key. it fixs mbr problem.(you was in grub2 with 10)

type : invalid signature and you will find different link.(google is your friend)
you have not yet a blue screen 'unmount volume '....

i think you should ask your question with another title : hibernation in dual-boot is better than boot problen with xp.
as soon as your title will be ready, (write the same words than your first post), full of similars answers will appears (solved problem) and you will not waste your time.
