Ubuntu software installed, can't locate any programs.

Asked by Marcel Wadley

Ubuntu software installed, can't locate any programs. Totally new to Ubuntu. Have looked thru every location in applications, places, system. Any way that I can track each item's location when it downloads? appreciate any advice.
After going through Synaptic, still can't find location in hopes of launching programs. Initially looking for Visor phone syncronization program, then Chinese translation program and so on, which I have downloaded. These were all from the Ubuntu software site. Synaptic gave description but not location. Excuse my lack of knowledge but would greatly appreciate any pointers. Currently still trying to locate.

open file manager, at the left hand side you will find a root/file system option click on it. your system file/folder will be shown.
Now go to var->cache->apt->archive here you will find your all downloaded packages.

Several things.

1. Do you have the desktop version of Ubuntu version 10.04? If so you should have a gui interface.
2. Did you use either the apt-get install [App Name] from the command line? If not did you use the graphical Ubuntu software install process.
3. These are all software packages you installed from within Ubuntu?

If you installed with Ubuntu's gui or command line utility they should be readily visible on your menu system.

Get back to me.

Thank you all for your advice, your all awesome!
With your combined description of my Systems file, I was able to verify the names of my programs and, using "Search for files", located the executable file. Once I located that, I set my cursor on Applications and right clicked to "Edit Menus/ New Item / Browse" to place the launcher icon where I desired.
Thank you all again.
One last question if you have any insight. My most needed program does not show up with an exe. file. Yes, I downloaded from inside Ubuntu. It is a synchronization program for Visor PDA-phone. Are there other codecs which would indicate executing programs?

If you are using Synaptic Package Manager - Select an installed package, choose the "Installed Files" tab in the package properties pan.

You have a full list of downloaded files and locations where they are installed.

Thanks Artemy, that gave me a great path for locating any and all programs. Thank you Tarun, GWShark, and Arjun for helping me find my systems files and pointing to the folders where some of my downloads exist. Thank you all for your time and answers.
I will continue to discover how to control where my system downloads to. Thanks again, very much.
