Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Random Freezes

Asked by Duy Nguyen

I have been seeking help in the Ubuntu Forums, but have had no luck so far regarding the random freezes with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Please see the thread. There are so many affected users.

do you already performe a full memory test on your pc...?

Before to go too deep, please be sure your RAM is ok... please perform a full mem test using the Ubuntu grub menu option... at pc boot.

Yes, I did and it did not make any difference. Please...please ...please look at the thread. There have been so many work-arounds posted in the forum, but none of them solve this problem.

By the way, this random freezes occurred with Ubuntu 10.04, 9.10, 9.04, Xbuntu 10.04, and Linux Mint 9. I was able to keep the system stable for about three weeks with Xbuntu 10.04/kernel 2.6.32-21, but then the random freezes happened. I also lost all of my printing capability. If you look at the thread, these freezes happened on all type of machines, old and new.

Please run this command in terminal lspci -v | grep VGA and paste the output here
I'm afraid that your graphic card is blacklisted, also tell us do you use compiz?

I'm at work. The computer is at home. No, I do not use compiz. This problem occurred with other people who do not use old Intel graphic card like mine so that is not likely a problem. If you just take a look at the posted thread, you can see that it happened to all different types of graphic cards.

There's a variety of hardware in above thread, so you can't be sure that the freeze is caused by the same reason, we are now trying to locate the problem step by step, indeed with your help.

Many random complete lockups since installing 10.04 a few months ago.

No log output. If music is playing when the lockup happens I get about 5 seconds of stutter (half a second of audio repeating itself for 5 seconds). Then hard reboot necessary.

Nicolas, does freeze happens when you using any particular application like Firefox or watching videos online, or with compiz maybe? Please see the links below, there is a known bug in some of the i945 and i965 BIOS that causes system to freeze. I hope you'll find some answer or workaround there.

it' s really random, no particular ap is runing at the time. I have tried without compiz, without Nvidia drivers, with and without floppy enabeled in the bios and nothing works.
I really hope some fix is find, but really, i am a Linux user for so long, i am not ready to change for Win. or Mac.
So i will endure the freezes and wait.

I too have been affected by this random bug.

I have an older HP Pavillion dv1000 using 10.04m Kernel 2.6.34-020634, Gnome 2.30.2

I am using Compiz but that had been working fine without any problems at all the past 2 Ubuntu releases. Ever since I updated to 10.04 the random freezing started. There's not a particular application that causes this freezing.

Please let me know what type of information I can give about my system that would help find a solution to this problem.

Thanks.

I have this bug. My system is a asus p55dpro mb, i7 860 cpu, with a nvidia graphics, 4 GB RAM. The system is much more stabl;e than when i initially installed it, but freezes still occur. It's still unuseable for serious work. 9.10 is still stable with no crashes. I have a few issues i can't resolve, but i use it at work on a number of pc's and laptops. I notice some issues with ubuntu 10.04 with the hd in the logs - although no other distro on the same drive has reported problems. Other distros include ubuntu 9.10, mint 9, kubuntu 10.04 and ubuntu 10.04 (64 amd). kubuntu was totally useless for a long time with same issues, but has become much more stable. It seems this issue is a kernal issue, since other distros are having same issues. I strongly dislike some changes in 10.04, so i may abandon ubuntu and change to debian stable. Even if ubuntu resolved the freezes, i still won't like some changes, and 10.10 seems to be changing more things which kind of bugs me

I'm wondering if i'm having hd errors: is the following errors hd errors?

Lots of lockups on my 64bit installation ever since upgrade. Problems persist on a clean install with erratic mouse behavior followed by complete mouse and keyboard freeze.

The problem seems to be greatly exasperated by running a vmware player instance of Win7 in enhanced graphics mode, when things go heywire within a few minutes, but the issue is not dependent on a vm running or ever having been run in a session.

My system info follows

Please go to this site > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze
There are instructions which will help you find the problem and report to the developers.
It is very important to check the md5sum before you burn the ISO and perform a full memory test before proceed any further reports here. Thanks!

I have the same problem too; my "solution" was to downgrade to Ubuntu 9.10, which I am actually running.

Sorry for my english, but I think... part of you will find a solution here:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13892 (see the #18 until the End)

This is a solution for module ath5k. But who knows? Other modules can have the same problem.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Duy Nguyen for more information if necessary.
