THere is no necessity for a HDD in a PC. The LiveCD doesn't need one as it runs purely in RAM. If the system can boot USB you could use an SD card or USB memory stick and install the OS to that and THAT will act as a HDD (albeit very slowly).

The fan should turn on when needed. As there is no HDD your system will generate less heat (and noise) due to less components and less moving parts.

you answered part of the question and that is great and now i would like to know why there is a timing issue now when there was not one before and my laptop keeps shutting off on its own only a few seconds after i turn it on and start to use my cd rom with the OS on it?

Check the BIOS settings are representative of the system. You should also test your RAM for errors using the live CD (press space when the stickman shows up and select memory test

Sounds like the laptop is faulty then. If it wont stay on lon enough to get into BIOS then you need to get the thing looked at and is nothing to do with Ubuntu.

If you take the battery out and run it on mains only it way help. You need to disable the hard drive controller so it doesnt get attempted to be used.

oh and one other thing, even though u said i should not need a fan because there is no HDD, it is still getting exceptionally hot in the upper left corner of my laptop. I unfortunately do not know if that would harm other parts of the motherboard or not but normally the fan would come on but now it does not come on at all. and you also mentioned that a SD memory card would act as a temp for a hard drive. is that correct? such as the micro or mini SD storage cards with the card readers that are about an inch or so big? correct???

by the way, u folks are so much nicer than Microsoft guys, they are always treating my questions like i was not even supposed to be on the same planet at they are? thank you for being so patient with me.

The PC will shutdown if it gets too hot. You will need less fan activity due to no drive making lots of heat but the cpu and ram will still generate lots of heat which needs moving. drives get hot due to moving parts so have a lot of friction, SD cards and the like do not have this so are much cooler (although are slower).

Can you help with this problem?
