Upgrading from a highly customized 8.04 Ubuntu to 10.04

Asked by argama

Hello! Thanks Ubuntu developers!

I've been using Ubuntu 8.04 for long and have decided to upgrade it to 10.04.
My system was first installed in a PC with very limited disk space.
It was later cloned to a bigger hard disk (original partitions were copied with the same sizes).

So I made some customizations to the system, including:
1 using Xfce, and removed ubuntu-desktop
2 using symbolic links to link /home and /tmp to a bigger partition

Would the upgrade process require ubuntu-desktop to be present, and break the symbolic links?

Thank you very much.

My suggestion is, backup /home and install from scratch Ubuntu, recreating partitions as needed.
The backup is always useful, you don't know when 2,5 year old hardware will fail.

Thanks Federico. I think that should be the most appropriate.

But would still want to know whether it will be problematic if the symbolic links are kept like that during the upgrade.

The symbolic links are kept because /home is not touched in the upgrade. It just upgrades packages.
