Buggy - Glitchy Why did I Download this? Help! Ubuntu OS

Asked by Ian Bower

Hey -

A big part of my plan to switch to Linux involved convincing my wife that she would like it better.

And She does.

When It works.

We have a few problems, Firstly, she cant use the account that I made for her, because when I do the following, the screen fades to black and never comes back -----

From my desktop - Switch to Her Desktop (Everything is fine) then Switch back to my desktop (screen goes blank)

When she Is ON her desktop, the wireless icon in the top right hand corner doesn't seem to function (i.e. its not there, just a "Status notification" Icon, but not a wireless icon) So it makes the process more difficult in order for her to connect to the internet.

and lastly - and maybe most importantly - after the system has been running for about 1 hr or so unattended (goes to screen saver) It locks up.

The screen saver locks up, you cant access the desktop and you have to Hardboot it. thats a HUGE problem.

If anyone has any solutions to any of these - it would make convincing my wife easier!!!

Please tell me what additional info you need, and I will be happy to provide it.

Thanks.

I would assume you are looking at an apci issue or incompatible hardware. I would start looking at the system logs under the system menu, administration, log file viewer.

I am running on a HP DV6227cl Pavilion laptop with 0 problems.

you can always open a terminal and keep it open and use "tail -f /var/log/messages"

This will let you see messages sent to the messages log file as they occur in hopes of catching the problem.

Outside of this I can't think of anything else right now.

how would I recognize a problem when I see one? And what do I do when I see it?

Please avoid it and use MagicSysRq instead.
