10.04 Trial boot from CD stalls with blank screen

Asked by Ronnie Johnson

My Toshiba Satellite Pro A30 died last week (unreadable sectors on HD).
I have tried resurrecting with Ubuntu 10.04 booting from a CD.
However, the laptop starts to read the CD, displays the logos at the bottom centre of screen then seems to stall with a blank screen.
I have tried the same CD in an old desktop computer and it works fine.
I have also tried using both the desktop and netbook versions.
I am a complete newcomer to Linux.
The laptop is about seven years old and probably not worth spending extra money on a new hard drive.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.
