Win 98 SE & 8.04.4 LTS dual-boot upgrade to 10.04

Asked by steve hussey

I am considering an Upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 from 8.04.4. Problem is, how do I save the Win 98SE partition, and continue dual-boot option? I would like to keep my settings pretty much the way I have them. Will the new version of grub need to be modified? Will the old DOS MBR still run as before in dual-boot?

Computer in question will run 10.04 just fine in live CD. I like the LTS option as I do not need the latest and greatest to do my work.

Will it be necessary to remove non-Ubuntu apps such as adobe reader, flash, java, etc. before upgrading?

The win98 will be untouched during the upgrade. All the upgrade will do is install Lucid debs to upgrade the hardy ones. Its like installing new software in your current system. The dual boot will not be touched.

The flash, java stuff will stand and be upgraded with the upgrade, there should be no issue there. Just go for it dude :)
