Asked by Lewis

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS install hangs at kernel thread helper. it hangs on the following line
 [ 0.077909] [<c0104087>] kernel_thread_helper =0x770x10
I have got the same message if i try running from disk or from installing.
I also once got a blinking cursor on running from disk but no install.
I have a amd xp2400 with 1 gig of ram.

It was a CD I burned from iso I down loaded
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386
the cd gives me the option the try Ubuntu or install and other options like check hd and memory.
I beleve the hang is on both the Install option and try option.
it get to the line
[ 0.077909] [<c0104087>] kernel_thread_helper =0x770x10
and it stops and I have tried installing with both cd rom drives i have on my computer.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you check the CD for defects?

Ok the MD5 is good.

Have you tried removing some ram? People seem to point to bad ram in this post:

Also make sure your BIOS is up to date. You can also try setting it to failsafe default to make sure it is ok in settings.

I put bios into fail safe and tried 3 different sets of ram and still got error and I know 2 sets work on another computer. I think the issue is with the mother board because the mother board has provisions for PC 100 ram and DDR the install works with the PC 100 ram but not DDR so I think the issue is with the mother board well never the less I have installed on another machine so i am going to say its the mother board issue. and since its working with other ram I am going to mark solved Mother board issue

Could try upgrading the BIOS if there is a later version (risky)
