Control-w keypress unreliable

Asked by David Stodolsky

Control-w key press is unreliable under Ubuntu Lucid 64 bit. Tabs in FF or other browsers often respond to the key press once and thereafter have no effect. Pulling down the menu and selecting 'close tab' always works and sometimes the new key press will close a tab.

These problems don't appear in XP and Win7, however, the problem does occur in XP after suspend. Changing key boards had no effect. These are USB keyboards.

One of the keyboards had the old style (round) Win/PC connector

That happens with webpages with flash content. The flash plugin steals keyboard events and prevents CTRL+W. There's not much you can do, but blocking flash with the flashblock extension.

The pages do have flash content, but so do the ones use with XP and Win7. Used the same site for all tests. Also, same site on the Mac never shows a problem like this.

There is a more general problem with flash, however. With several tabs with flash content, flash plays very jerkily. This isn't seen in a browser run in Win7 in a VMware window.

The flash pluging is different in every operating system. So the linux version streals the keypresses while the other ones don't.
Flash is a bad product. I block it by default.

I have discovered that if I have only two tabs open, the system seems to work OK. With more tabs, there is jerky playback and the key press problem.
