Compaq Presario 2200 desktop

Asked by Reed Baldridge

I have a handme down Compaq Presario 2200 Desktop. It has a Processor of 180 MHz with MediaGX Texhnology. The memory is 16 MB, and the Hard Drive is 1.6 GB. I have downloaded the different types of Ubuntu ( Ubuntu, XUbuntu, earlier versions, and Puppy). The only one that comes close is the XUbuntu, and I just get to choose English. After that, thay all freeze. I eventually have to turn the computer off and try again? Is this computer to old, or can I try a different method?

Yes, it is pretty old computer. I doubt any newer OS will work on it. You can try with Linux Tiny Core, or SliTaz, or maybe Damn Small Linux.

Memory and Disk Space Requirements

You must have at least 44MB of memory and 500MB of hard disk space to perform a normal installation. Note that these are fairly minimal numbers. For more realistic figures, see the section called “Meeting Minimum Hardware Requirements”.

Installation on systems with less memory[4] or disk space available may be possible but is only advised for experienced users.

[4] Installation images that support the graphical installer require more memory than images that support only the textual installer and should not be used on systems with less than 44MB of memory. If there is a choice between booting the regular and the graphical installer, the former should be selected.
