Hi
Which ISO versions of 10.04 have you tried?
How far did you get with the install and at what point did it fail?
10.04 has had a lot of install probs- you are not alone!

Hi :)

Have you tried using any of the Ubutnu Cds as a LiveCd?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
This allows you to try the various combinations of boot-options fairly quickly. Before trying to install almost any version of linux it is usually better to get a LiveCd/Usb session working first.

For the laptop specs you quote i would try both the standard desktop 32bit edition and also the Ubuntu Netbook Edition (or Remix). But also, since you have been having troubles trying to get Ubuntu to work, it is well worth trying other versions of gnu&linux instead of Ubuntu. Often a different one might work quite easily and that usually helps us get the one we want working. Different versions of gnu&linux are called distros. Mostly they are each quite specialist in their aims but there are a lot of normal desktops aimed at new users. I would recommend trying LiveCds of Fedora, openSUSE & Mandriva to cover 3 large distros comparable to Ubuntu but it is probably better to start with a few of the tiny distros just to see if we can get something working.

I would start by trying sliTaz, Wolvix Hunter 1.1.0 & Knoppix just to get a LiveCd working on the machine

It is worth buying a small stack of really cheap blank Cds for this. Usually the cheaper the Cds the better the result. Also each time you make a Cd it is worth doing an md5sum check because it is a fast way of checking the Cd burning process worked well enough. Sometimes you can even md5sum check the download before making the Cd

So, that should give plenty of options and things to try but please let us know which way you would like to start with so we can try to help you through this.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
