I don't know how to tell which Ubuntu distribution is installed on my computer.

try this in terminal. lsb_release -a

Thanks, David, but I can't even find a shell tool (Command Tool) on the KDE desktop.

use terminal accessories/ terminal type or paste lsb_release -a press enter

You can open a shell prompt in KDE by selecting KDE Main Menu => System => Shell.

HI :)

I think pressing Ctrl & F2 gives a command-line pop-up box but from there i would try typing in

konsole

to try to open a proper normal command-line. This guide might help
