Xubuntu CD Install problem

Asked by Mike Harrison

Am trying to install xubuntu 7.04 on a Toshiba Portege 3440CT with a Mobile Pentium lll processor at 500 MHz, 192Mb ram and 3.7Gb hard drive free space from a purchased i386 CD. Xubuntu logo and install menu appears but whichever install option I select, after the xubuntu logo re-appears I just get the message:-

/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
(initramfs) _

Can anyone help, please. This is my first try at anything to do with Linux so I am a complete novice.

Many thanks

Mike

I have now tried removing the quiet and splash boot options as suggested in the reply to a similar problem and now the hard drive chunters for a while and the same message re-appears after the following:-

[ 8.560000] hda: cache flushes not supported
[ 8.560000] hda: hda1
[ 8.704000] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
[ 8.884000] usb 1-1: configuration #2 chosen from two choices

ADSL Router is connected to the USB port

Burnt the alternate disk as recommended, installed fine from that. Happy hours playing now!

Thanks
