Can't access spare HDD from *Browse*. ATI GFX Drivers problem.

Asked by duggie264

Hi there, first my machine specs.
Abit nf-7s
amd barton 3200
1GB Crucial Ballistix
2 x Maxtor 40GB ATA 133
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
Asus 19" LCD (1440x900 native)

Firstly, upon installation of Ubuntu 7.04, I can not change the resolution to match that of the monitors native resolution, I am limited to 1280x1024.
I changed to the restricted ATI driver to see if I could then get the correct resolution - no joy and now I have no desktop effects.

How can I change my resolution to the correct one for my panel, and when I deselect the restricted driver, will this remove it and replace it with OS provided driver, or will it need manual stripping and installation?

Secondly, and lastly!, I am attempting to use my secondary HDD (installed on IDE 0/S) which is recognised as dev/hdb1. I have managed to format it as FAT 32 and after installing Rhythmbox (basically I want to use it to store my music) I manually entered the location for the music library as "dev/hdb1/Music". However I can not find this hdd amongst the Linux file structure?

How do I get hdb1 to show up when I browse the filesystem? Oh and is it possible to rename the disks something more "user friendly" than hda and hdb?

I have searched previous questions, but found no working answers so far. Can anyone help?

PS Please keep it reasonable basic as I only had my linux cherrry broken last night at 2307!!

Cheers

Duggie

hdb1 is the internal device name for where its physically located on your computer, typically these raw "device" nodes are mounted somewhere else such as in /media/. for example i have a secondary hard-drive at /dev/hdb1 and i 'mount' it to /media/storage/

there is a guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions that seems to be a good one to guide you through mounting partitions

there are also a few possible fixes for your resolution problems here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FixVideoResolutionHowto#head-42bafbcee7a10ed50f2d9016555557b9874be252

Can you help with this problem?
