Ubuntu 10.4 Live fails to boot when 9.10 does

Asked by Bradley Saunders

Platform: Compaq Presario V2000 - Intel Celeron M 1.5GHz, 2GB DRAM, 14.0" WXGA (1280x768), no wireless installed
Platform boots and operates well using either Ubuntu 9.10 or Kubuntu 9.10 Live CDs but neither of the 10.4 LTS releases of these OSs boot -- the 10.4 releases get all the way to the end of the boot process and then the screen briefly displays colorful garbage followed by a blank screen, and no keystrokes are accepted (for example, I can't use the Cntl-ALt F1 combination to change to the console mode.

Question at hand is whether there is an obvious reason for why 9.10 releases would boot but 10.4 releases won't?
Switching to the console screen during to boot to monitor the process, I noticed nothing in terms of an error message just before the end which might indicate why it seems to branch off into the ether. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Is it possible that after I actually fully install the 9.10 release I will be able to upgrade successfully to 10.4 without experiencing this failure to boot the Live CD?

Thanks much, Brad

Did you MD5 test the 10.04 ISO?
Did you burn as slowly as you could?
Did you run the CD verifier?

Answers: No, yes, yes (the images were created using Win7's built-in CD writer) ... I also successfully booted the 10.4 Ubuntu Live image on my HP dv6000 notebook just to be sure that it was a good image. Please note that both the Ubuntu and Kubuntu 10.4 images failed on the Compaq V2000 in the same way.

So, subsequent to my original posting, another poster raised a similar issue and the answer provided there (adding "i915.modeset=1" to the boot command line) solved the problem of getting the 10.4 releases booting on my Compaq V2000 notebook.

I would still be interested in any answers that someone might have as to why this was necessary to fix when switching from the 9.10 release to the 10.4 release.

Thanks, Brad
