Uninstall Ubuntu from netbook

Asked by Mirko Menegazzo

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition on my Samsung n130 Netbook.
Now I have XP and Ubuntu dual boot. I would like to remove it for the time being and going back to boot directly XP only.

I deleted the partition using Gparted but I ended up with a grub prompt and some errors on booting. I re-installed Ubuntu to be able to boot to XP again.

The Samsung Netbook comes with a recovery utility. I might try to restore the system using that utility to see if it gets rid of Ubuntu, but I think I will need to delete the Ubuntu partition manually afterwards to get back that disk space...I do think I will be able to see that partition from XP though.. :/

Shall I try that way or do you have a better solution?

Thank you

Grub is installed on a little bit on the beginning of your Hard Drive called the "Master Boot Record" (MBR). After you remove Linux from the Hard Drive you need to: fixmbr

This can be done in different ways e.g. if you don't have an XP setup CD you can use freedos to do this. Have a look at e.g. http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/

Otherwise Google: fixmbr xp
or siminalr

Yuo will need your XP CD to reinstate the boot loader

Boot to XP CD
Press ENTER
Press R
You are now in a recovery console
You can now run:

fixmbr
fixboot

This will reinstate NTLDR

reboot and you will load Windows. You can then remove the Ubuntu partitions and reformat to NTFS (if you wish) using disk manager.

Can you help with this problem?
