Cannot update from Ubuntu 5.01 to 7.01

Asked by yeemish

I have installed Ubuntu 5.01 (Brezzy Badger) and just recieved the CD with 7.01 (Feisty Fawn). I cannot get the computer to update the OS from 5.01 to 7.01. Neither can I do a clean install as I receive an error message that indicates a missing file. Can anyone help me upgrade the OS? Nothing will update, not even Firefox. The only "updates" I can download are the ones from the orignial 5.01 install CD. This is my first expirence with Linux, and hopefully not my last as Windows is very easy to update.

If you start the update manager, there should be a button on top, saying "New distribution release available." To force this, you can also run "update-manager -d" from a terminal.

Notice that it isn't recommended to upgrade from an old base in one step, omitting some releases. If you have a fresh 5.04 install, you could consider reinstalling it.

Can you help with this problem?
