How long to Install?

Asked by Caz Morgan

I am trying to install Ubuntu so I can try it before wiping over my windows 7. I downloaded it which was very quick. I have followed the step on the instructions. I now have a small black screen with some lines of text in green and the last line says
'Extracting the ISO:The progress bar will not move until finished. Please be patient'

It has been like that for over an hour. How long should it take and have I done something wrong or need to change something on my system

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

How are you using the file you downloaded? Are you mounting the ISO etc. Details please.

I've manager to get onto the main screen but now I can't seem to get my wireless to work. It says I have to enable drivers ... I click enable and it says downloading and installing but I can't download so then it gives me an error message. I will say I'm a complete technophobe so you will have to explain in baby language. Sorry to be such a dumbo.

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
2) check the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM go to the Windows section

Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps otherwise install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/ and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

3) burn the iso file onto a cd to do it install and use http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5
4) insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and reboot your pc
5) You must not see Windows starting and you can try Ubuntu from cdrom and then install it

Ask new question if you have trouble installing or if you have any doubt.

Hope this helps

First step to do is to connect your pc to the net then upgrade it using the menu

System → Administration → Update Manager please press on the "Verify" button and install all proposed updates
reboot your pc to see if after latest upgrades it have not any issue then try to configure the wireless.

Obviously, keep the pc connected to the net with wired connection and use wireless only when you are connected with wireless.

Ask here, please made a new question if you have trouble.
