Ubuntu 10.4 server doesn't start Gnome

Asked by Tim Whitbread

I finally got past the problem with the disk change being requested during loading the base system.
I started the recover broken system option from a totally different DVD drive and it all worked - old DVDRW Drive was NEC ND 4550A new DVDRW drive is LiteOn SOHW-812S. The freeze point then seemed to be in the APT section of the base system.

Having got it to install it boots ok but ends up in tty: mode.

Not being familiar with Ubuntu, what settings should I change?

Thanks

The reason that I'm installing Ubuntu server is that I want to run a server as well as a client workstation on two separate machines, I can then test various pieces of server based software in a Ubuntu environment, rather than Fedora 10,11 and 12 as at the moment.

The Fedora implementation doesn't make any distinction between server and desktop implementations and uses the Gnome (or KDE) desktop for everything. If Ubuntu server doesn't supoort a GUI then it isn't much use to me.

Why did you install ubuntu server if you wanted a desktop system? The server install doesn't ship with a desktop. If you want a Gnome desktop then install the desktop ISO.

Can you help with this problem?
