Blank Screen on Boot

Asked by Joshua B

I recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 64-bit onto a new machine I built. When I would put in the CD and selected the first option (boot/install), the computer would seem to have activity after the kernel "is alive" message but I would get no display. I was able to resolve this issue by setting the display options at the first screen to the largest resolution. The installation went fine, but now when I boot I am getting the same blank display after the "kernel is alive" message. I am able to boot in recovery mode and even use startx to get the display, but I don't want to have to do this on every boot.
For reference, I'm using a Nvidia 8800 GTS, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, an evga 680i MB, and 2 GB G.Skill DDR2 800 ram on a Samsung 941BW LCD monitor.

I am having the same issue as Joshua. I am running pretty similar hardware as well.

XFX nVidia 8800 GTS
Intel C2Duo E6700
ASUS 680i MB
2 GB mushkin DDR2 800
Hanns-G HW223D 22" LCD

I was able to successfully install and run the 32-bit version of Ubuntu. I did have some troubles getting the 8800 GTS to function properly in the 32-bit version, maybe the 64bit version really does not like the 8800 GTS?

Can you help with this problem?
