Boot to root recovery console and run:

dpkg-reconfigure gdm

Should be ok

i did that and it acted like it worked as in no error code and such so i had it restart and still just came to a background with no login dialog

im not sure if this should be included but i did install kubuntu on the same computer which started with the kernel 2.6.32-21 generic which worked aside from the graphic glich that could only fix by lowering the resolution but after i upgraded the kernel to 2.6.32-22 it was doing the same thing as ubuntu only showing the background with no login dialog so im guessing that something went wrong with the kernel

of course whats lucky is that kubuntu kept the old kernal for gnome to boot up so im going to see about getting 2.6.32-21 reinstalled for ubuntu itself to see if that fixes things
